Thanks to the many Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van safety features and this model’s reputation for reliability, you and your team can focus on getting the job done without worry.

Here is a closer look at the Sprinter’s available safety systems.

What Is Active Brake Assist?

Mercedes-Benz offers Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which is available for all Sprinter models. One of the primary features of this package is Active Brake Assist. This safety feature uses radar sensors to detect potential danger in front of your van. It provides audio and visual warnings if the sensors detect traffic or other impediments in your path.

If you do not apply the brakes in time, Active Brake Assist activates them for you. It can also apply additional pressure to the brakes if the sensors indicate that your van will not slow or stop in time to avoid a collision. The system also automatically controls brake and hazard lights, and it is smart enough to deactivate if you steer out of the path of vehicles or obstacles.

Active Brake Assist makes the Sprinter the only model in the work van class able to detect and stop for pedestrians.

The brake assist engages when you move forward at speeds of at least 18 mph. This trait means you do not have to override the system when parking or maneuvering in tight quarters.

What Is a Blind Spot Assist Mirror?

Van and truck drivers often struggle with blind spots beside and directly behind their vehicles. This challenge causes safety concerns for you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road. The Blind Spot Assist Mirror system allows you to see areas that are not visible with standard mirrors. You can check these areas without turning your head and taking your eyes off the road.

This Sprinter van safety feature relies on cameras and sensors to monitor the road space directly beside the van and for 10 feet behind the back bumper. If it detects another vehicle in this space, the system sends an initial alert in the form of a triangle icon, which lights up in the mirror on the corresponding side of the van.

The Blind Spot Assist Mirror protects you if you fail to notice this first warning. It steps up the notifications by flashing the icon and producing an audible caution.

Finally, if you don’t respond to these signals, the autonomous system engages and corrects the steering. As with Active Brake Assist, the autonomous mode only activates at speeds higher than 18 mph.

What Is Attention Assist?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 100,000 crashes per year are due to drowsy driving. Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist seeks to address this common problem with advanced technology that learns your driving habits and alerts you when it detects differences in steering or braking.

Attention Assist uses algorithms to learn your driving patterns and detect signs of distraction or fatigue. It primarily looks for steering corrections, which are a common sign of driver tiredness. It also looks at braking and other factors and considers your response to external road conditions, such as slippery pavement or crosswinds. In all, the driver attention algorithm measures 70-plus parameters.

This safety feature can prove invaluable after a long day at a jobsite or hours on the highway. It sends visual and audio alerts to warn you about fatigue and encourage you to take a break or switch drivers.

Digital Interior Mirror

Mercedes-Benz has a digital interior mirror offering a more comprehensive view than traditional rearview glass. This system is available on cargo, crew, and passenger Sprinter models, and you can have this feature preinstalled on Cab Chassis models. This feature is essential for van layouts with partition walls and anyone carrying equipment that obscures a traditional rearview.

The digital mirror uses cameras to provide a 40-degree perspective, which is twice as wide as traditional mirrors. Dynamic visual controls adjust the picture when needed. With these digital enhancements, the view will be clear even in low-light or high-light conditions when darkness or glare would otherwise impair visibility.

Sprinter vans, including Cab Chassis models, also have available 360-degree view cameras. This unique feature is helpful for parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.
