What Is Included In Sprinter Service A and Service B?

Over 300,000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans were sold in the US between 2012 and 2022, making the Sprinter one of the best-selling vans in the country. The Sprinter owes much of its popularity to its versatility, rugged dependability, and exceptional performance — all thanks to precision German engineering. You simply can’t go wrong with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter if you’re looking for an office van, refrigerated cargo van, construction transport, or many other custom capabilities.

But you must observe Mercedes-Benz service schedules to keep your Sprinter van in tip-top shape. Mercedes-Benz splits vehicle service intervals into Service A and Service B, each of which has its own agenda of maintenance tasks. Read on to learn the difference between the two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter service packages.

What Is Sprinter Service A?

Service A comes before Service B. It is performed after the van racks up 10,000 miles on the odometer or after one year of ownership — whichever comes first. For newer Sprinter vans, from 2009 and later, the Service A schedule changes to 20,000 miles or two years after the first Service A appointment.

So, what happens during a Service A session? Once you bring your Sprinter van in for a Service A appointment, our Certified Mercedes-Benz Technicians get to work on the following tasks:

  • Visual inspection. Check for any signs of damage, wear, corrosion, or stress around the vehicle, including the drivetrain, body panels, lights, windows, paint, belts, hoses, suspensions, and steering.
  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement. The used oil is flushed and replaced with fresh motor oil. Also, a new oil filter is installed to go with the oil change.
  • Fluid level checks and top-ups. All fluid reservoirs (coolant, washer fluid, brake fluid, diesel exhaust fluid, etc.) are checked and filled to their correct levels. Also, fluids and their filters may be replaced as needed.
  • Tire pressure checks. All tires, including the spare, are checked and inflated to the correct pressures, depending on each tire’s rating.
  • Brake inspection. Each brake component, from the brake pedal and lines to the pads/linings, is closely examined and replaced if necessary.
  • Maintenance minder reset. Once the service is complete, a technician resets the service minder/light so it starts clocking new miles for the next service cycle.

What Is Sprinter Service B?

Service B is much more comprehensive and is done every 20,000 miles or two years after Service A. It covers all the van repairs and maintenance practices in Service A and more. Additional Service B tasks include:

  • Brake fluid exchange
  • V-belt replacement (every 80,000 miles)
  • HVAC dust filter or AC system combination filter replacement
  • All-round lubrication (trailer hitch, door hinges, locks, etc.)
  • Transmission oil and filter replacement
  • Fuel filter replacement
  • Spark plugs replacement (for gas engines)

How Can You Tell Your Sprinter Van Needs Service?

It’s inconvenient to track how many miles you have driven since your last service appointment. So, Mercedes-Benz simplifies vehicle service scheduling with the Active Service System (ASSYST). ASSYST is a computer system that alerts you when Service A or Service B is due. In most Sprinter models, a wrench-shaped symbol appears on the dashboard instrument panel with a message saying Service A or B is due in a specified number of miles.
